How Much Sleep Is Enough?

The amount of sleep humans need can vary based on age, individual differences, and lifestyle factors. Generally, sleep needs change throughout our lifespan. Here's a rough guideline for different age groups:


Newborns (0-3 months):

Newborns require the most sleep, ranging from 14 to 17 hours a day, although it's often in short segments due to feeding.

Infants (4-11 months):

Infants typically need about 12 to 15 hours of sleep a day, including daytime naps.

Toddlers (1-2 years):

Toddlers usually need 11 to 14 hours of sleep a day, which includes both nighttime sleep and naps.

Preschoolers (3-5 years):

Preschoolers require around 10 to 13 hours of sleep, including a daytime nap.

School-Age Children (6-12 years):

School-age kids generally need 9 to 12 hours of sleep a night.

Teenagers (13-18 years):

Teens need about 8 to 10 hours of sleep, but due to busy schedules and changing circadian rhythms, they might struggle to get enough.

Adults (18-64 years):

Adults usually need 7 to 9 hours of sleep a night for optimal functioning.

Older Adults (65+ years):

Older adults might need slightly less sleep, around 7 to 8 hours a night.
